Continuing my series on Antalya’s attractions that you can visit on your own, without organized tours.
Finally, it’s time to talk about the new cable car. The “teleferik, ” as the locals call it, is located in the Konyaaltı district. Tourists heading from the airport to hotels in Kemer can spot the cable car just as they leave the city.
The cable car opened in February 2017, connecting the Sarısu neighborhood in Antalya with the summit of Mount Tünektepe, which stands about 600 meters above sea level. Previously, to enjoy the stunning view, you had to drive up a dangerous winding road. Now, it’s just an eight-minute ride in a panoramic cabin to reach the top!
At the summit, there are several observation decks and a café with very reasonable prices, where you can enjoy coffee and snacks.
Construction began back in 2013, when access to Tünektepe was completely closed to the public. The mountain used to host a popular nightclub, which was later transformed into a revolving restaurant — imagine sitting in a restaurant while the scenery outside slowly changes as the building rotates around its axis. Pretty cool, right? Unfortunately, the restaurant is currently closed and no longer rotates. : (
The boarding station is located right in the Sarısu recreational and beach area, so after your descent, you can have a picnic in the park or take a swim in the sea.
You can reach the cable car by public transport — it’s the final stop for most city buses, including lines 06 and 08 coming from Lara (Terra City). If you’re coming from the hotel area in Kundu, take bus 07, get off at the Terra City stop, and transfer to bus 06 or 08 to the end of the line — the whole trip takes about an hour. If you’re coming from Kemer or nearby towns, just ask the driver to drop you off near the cable car station.
As of the latest update for this article (November 2024), the cable car is temporarily closed for reconstruction.
